Since having completed the Houston Grand Opera Studio program in 2003, the exciting, young, American Bass-Baritone, Joshua Winograde has established a reputation as a singer of significant vocal ability and exceptional theatrical breadth. Endowed with a “….lovely bass.” (Bernard Holland, New York Times), “…with a baritone both virile and sweet.” (Justin Davidson, New York Newsday), and singing with “…dynamic flourish…” (Tim Smith, Baltimore Sun), and with a “…sensitivity and strength.” (Charles Michener, The New York Observer), this audience favorite consistently brings life to the characters he portrays.
In his short, prolific career, the young Mr. Winograde has performed 44 operatic roles for the finest companies and festivals in the US. He has sung with Houston Grand Opera, New York City Opera, Opera Theatre of St. Louis, Glimmerglass Opera, Spoleto Festival USA, Bard SummerScape, Chautauqua Opera Company, Wolf Trap Opera Company and Opera Santa Barbara. He has portrayed a broad range of characters representing varied musical styles from early music to contemporary and new works. Roles include Leporello (Don Giovanni), Volpone (Volpone), Basilio (Il Barbiere di Siviglia), Abimelech (Samson et Dalila), Bottom and Quince (A Midsummer Night’s Dream), Drago (Genoveva), Ivan Ivanovich (The Nose), Bubentsov (Moscow: Cherry Tree Tower), Achillas (Giulio Cesare), Reinmar von Zweter (Tannhäuser), Melisso (Alcina), Osmin (Die Entführung aus dem Serail), Der Sprecher (Die Zauberflöte), Haly(L’Italiana in Algeri), Pistola (Falstaff), Colline (La Bohème), Figaro (Le Nozze di Figaro), Grandpa Moss (The Tender Land), Mamm’Agata (Viva La Mamma), the Painter (Central Park: The Food of Love ), Frank Maurrant (Street Scene) and the King (The Little Prince) a role he created for Houston Grand Opera’s world premiere production. Upcoming on the operatic stage for Joshua Winograde are Ratcliffe (Billy Budd) for Houston Grand Opera, and Second Armored Man/Second Priest (Die Zauberflöte) in a concert version with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, Leonard Slatkin conducting.
In concert, Mr. Winograde has sung with the most distinguished orchestras in the United States including the Los Angeles Philharmonic under the baton of Esa-Pekka Salonen, the Pacific Symphony with John Alexander, the Kansas City Symphony and Chorus with Michael Stern, and the Phoenix Symphony, with Georg Stangelberger. Most recently Mr. Winograde sang the Eight Scenes from Faust with the St. Louis Symphony for which he received high praise. Upcoming on the concert stage are an Opera Highlights Concert for Opera Santa Barbara followed by a return engagement with the Kansas City Symphony.
Joshua Winograde has been privileged to work with the finest conductors and directors performing today. He has been directed by Francesca Zambello, Leon Major, James Robinson, Frank Corsaro, Dieter Kaegi, Jay Lesenger, Ken Kazan, Ned Canty, Mark Lamos, Edward Berkley, Frank Corsaro, Chas Rader-Shieber and has performed under the batons of Patrick Summers, Daniel Beckwith, Jane Glover, George Manahan, Michael Barrett, Sergey Dreznin, Claus Peter Flor, Emmanuel Joël, James Lowe, Philippe Jordan, Alexander Anissimov, Joseph Colaneri, Peter Mark, Valery Ryvkin, Jerry Shannon, Dean Williamson, J. David Jackson, David Fallis, Stewart Robertson, Harry Bicket, Randall Behr, Grant Gershon.
Mr. Winograde received both undergraduate and graduate degrees from The Juilliard School in New York City. He is the recipient of several prestigious awards including a 2000 Sara Tucker Study Grant from the Richard Tucker Music Foundation, second place in the 2000 Eleanor McCollum Competition for Young Singers at the Houston Grand Opera, and a 2001 Shouse Career Grant from the Wolf Trap Foundation and Opera Company.
