“Gifted” American soprano Deborah van Renterghem is rapidly establishing herself as a young artist who consistently brings a “distinction of voice [and] style” to her work.  Winner of the prestigious Sullivan Career Grant and the distinguished Judith Raskin Memorial Award, Ms. van Renterghem has performed with prominent opera companies and orchestras in the US and abroad. 

Deborah van Renterghem has sung for Santa Fe Opera, Theater der Stadt Heidelberg, The Huntington Theater, Helsinki Strings, The Harrisburg Opera, The Bronx Opera, the Hessischer Rundfunk in Frankfurt, Unterwegs Theatre, Tulsa Opera, and the American Symphony Orchestra at Avery Fisher Hall.  She has performed numerous roles including Dido (Dido and Aeneas), Blanche (Dialogues of the Carmelites), Birdie (Regina), Tirsi (Clori, Tirsi, e Fileno), Clarice (The World of the Moon), Papagena (Die Zauberflöte), Barbarina (Le Nozze di Figaro), Bastienna (Bastien e Bastienna), the Governess (The Turn of the Screw), and Zweite Elf (Die Aegyptische Helena). She recently covered Christina for Aspen Music Festival and Santa Fe Opera, has sung Gianetta in Elixir of Love and the Confidant in Elektra, and has covered Dawn Upshaw’s Clemence in Kaija Saariaho’s L’amour de loin, a co-commission from the Salzburg Festival and Théâtre du Châtelet directed by Peter Sellars also for Santa Fe Opera.  Oratorio highlights include Poulenc’s Gloria, Mozart’s Requiem and Regina Coeli, Haydn’s Mass In Time of War and Creation, and Honegger’s King David. Most recent performances for Ms. van Renterghem include Rusalka on tour for Tulsa Opera and Echo in Tulsa Opera’s production of Ariadne auf Naxos. Upcoming in the 2007-2008 Season is a cover assignment for Palau de Música (Valencia) of the principal role of Julia (1984), Maestro Maazel's composition which was premiered at Covent Garden.

Other work in recent seasons includes Sutermeister’s Die schwarze Spinne for Gotham Chamber Opera, a reading for Santa Fe Opera, Pamina on tour for Tulsa Opera, an American Symphony Orchestra/Avery Fisher Hall debut as Spirit in a staged performance of Manfred, Robert Schumann’s musical setting of Byron’s celebrated poem. Recent recordings include the principal role in Lorin Maazel’s new composition, 1984 which premiere’s at Covent Garden in 2005. Ms. Renterghem has also sung the Soprano Soloist in Mendelssohn’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream for Kennett Symphony Orchestra and Strauss’ Four Last Songs with the Chamber Orchestra of Boston. For the Santa Fe Chamber Music Festival as part of its Music of the Masters Series, she has sung songs of Schubert with Roger Vignoles at the piano – filling in for the renowned Patricia Racette. Her reading was described as “…notable for the dark, even richness of her voice and the impeccable clarity of her delivery of the German text.”  Principal Artist assignments for Santa Fe Opera include Resi and Christine (cover) in Strauss’ Intermezzo and Fiordiligi in Così fan tutte.  Continuing a tradition of showcasing modern works, Ms. van Renterghem has sung the soprano solo in Schoenberg’s String Quartet No. 2 for the New Music Festival in Albuquerque, NMNext she sang Copland’s In The Beginning and the world premiere of The Valley of the Unrest – a new work of James Lavino in Cluj, Romania.  

Earlier work for Ms. van Renterghem includes Vaughn Williams’ Riders to the Sea (Nora) and in Gustave Holst’s Savitri (Savitri) – both for Prism Opera – Dolores in Jose Serrano’s zarzuela La Dolorosa, and Nedda in Leoncavallo’s I Pagliacci for Harrisburg Opera.  Following her successful performance of Kaija Saariaho’s acclaimed opera L’amour de loin,” Ms. Renterghem sang the world premiere of Ms. Saariaho’s “Changing Light” in Helsinki, Finland.
