A native of Mazatlán, Mexico, José Adán Pérez is currently in his second year of the Domingo-Thornton Young Artist Program at the Los Angeles Opera. A dramatically expressive singer possessing a rich, ample baritone of significant presence, Mr. Pérez turned to singing following undergraduate work in engineering in his native Mexico.
In his short career, Mr. Pérez has made important debuts in the baritone repertoire. He performed Marcello (La Bohème) for the IVAI Opera Program in Tel Aviv, Israel - a role he reprised for Los Angeles Opera in both a student matinee performance and a mainstage performance. In this role, he enjoyed the pleasure of performing under the batons of the distinguished Maestros Plácido Domingo and José Miguel Esandi. Other principal roles performed prior to his arrival in Los Angeles comprise Malatesta in Don Pasquale and Guglielmo in Coś fan tutte for IVAI, Figaro in Il Baribiere di Siviglia for The Academy of Vocal Arts of Philadelphia, Don Giovanni in the eponymous Mozart opera and Marullo in Rigoletto also for The Academy of Vocal Arts of Philadelphia. Principal roles on the mainstage in Mexico for Mr. Pérez include Belcore in L'Elisir d'Amore which he performed for the Mazatlan Arts Festival at the Teatro Ángela Peralto and Silvio in I Pagliacci, also for Mazatlan Arts Festival. Upcoming in 2008, Mr. Pérez looks forward to performances of Dandini (La Cenerentola) for Aspen Music Festival and a reprise of Figaro (Il Barbiere di Siviglia) for the Teatro Ángela Peralto, Mazatlán under the auspices of Cultural Direccion Municipal de Mazatlán.
Mr. Pérez has also enjoyed success on the concert and recital stages. While in Tel Aviv, he had the pleasure of singing numerous concerts and recitals around the city and in the New Israeli Opera House. In Mexico, he has sung in concert with Orquesta Sinaloa de las Artes, Bellas Artes Opera Orchestra, and Teatro Ángela Peralta.
Mr. Pérez has consistently distinguished himself in his musical pursuits. After receiving an engineering degree from Tecnologico de Monterrey, he was awarded a scholarship to Mexico's most prestigious Young Artist Training Program, the Sociedad Internacional de Valores Artisticos Mexicanos (SIVAM) where he began his formal vocal training. In 2006, Mr. Pérez was awarded the Third Prize in the Loren L. Zachary National Vocal Competition and he was a Philadelphia District Winner and Middle Atlantic Finalist at the 2006 Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions. Other honors include a 2005 SIVAN Plácido Domingo Scholarship, the INBA scholarship from the 2004 Carlo Morelli National Opera Competition, and most recently, the First Prize in the NOA Competition in Los Angeles, California.
Mr. Pérez currently resides in Los Angeles, California.
