Described as "…superb…" for his fine rendering of title role of Ormindo for Pittsburgh Opera, the young tenor, Arthur Espiritu, is establishing himself as a singer possessing an exceptionally beautiful, full lyric voice capable of conveying a broad range of characters and performing with great ease. The talented young tenor has trained and performed in distinguished programs and with fine opera companies in the United States. In addition to the programs of Santa Fe Opera, Opera Theatre of St. Louis, and most recently, Pittsburgh Opera, Mr. Espiritu has performed or has been invited to perform on the mainstage with Opera Memphis, Opera Theatre of St. Louis, Utah Festival Opera, Opera North and Pittsburgh Opera. In concert, he has sung with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra, the Jefferson Performing Arts Society, and as part of the summer series of the Marlboro Music Festival.
Mr. Espiritu has maintained a full performance schedule since having received an Artist Diploma from Oberlin College Conservatory of Music in 2004. In the most recent 2006/2007 season, in addition to the title role of Ormindo in Cavalli's L'Ormindo, he performed Tybalt in Gounod's Roméo et Juliette, Beppe in Leoncavallo's I Pagliacci, and Maintop in Pittsburgh Opera's highly acclaimed presentation of Benjamin Britten's Billy Budd. Also in the season, he sang the tenor solo in the Mozart Coronation Mass with Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra and was tenor soloist in The Symphony on Ice, also with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra. Upcoming roles include Pang in Puccini's Turandot with Opera Memphis, Don Ramiro in Rossini's La Cenerentola, also with Opera Memphis, and a return to Pittsburgh Opera's Benedum Center for his debut performance of Tebaldo in Bellini's I Capuleti ed I Montecchi with the distinguished Laura Claycomb and Vivica Genaux.
Other roles for Arthur Espiritu in prior seasons include Ferrando in Mozart's Cosí fan tutte, Brighella in Strauss' Ariadne auf Naxos, and Borsain Rigoletto. During this period Mr. Espiritu added the role of the Duke to his growing repertoire as a cover to the much admired Frank Lopardo's Duke. Other additions to his repertoire included Count Almaviva which he covered as a young artist in his second season with Santa Fe Opera in 2005 and Mao tse tung in John Adams's Nixon in China which he covered in 2004 while in the young artist program at the Opera Theatre of St. Louis. Also in 2004 while in the Opera Theatre of St. Louis program, he played the role of Remendadoin Bizet's Carmen. Immediately following assignments in St. Louis, Mr. Espiritu joined Opera North and performed the roles of Francis Flute in Britten's A Midsummer Night's Dream and Tybalt in Roméo and Juliette.
Mr. Espiritu is the recipient of the Rose-Palmai Tenser Mobile Opera Guild Award, as part of Mobile Opera's national voice competition and has received 2nd place awards in the Opera Birmingham Voice Competition, Regional Finals of the Metropolitan Opera National Council Audition, and The National Opera Association Voice Competition. In addition to the Artist Diploma which Mr. Espiritu received from Oberlin College Conservatory of Music, he earned both a Bachelor of Arts and a Master of Music from the University of New Orleans. He is currrently studying voice with Dr. Robert White in New York.
