Winner of the distinguished 2009 George London Award, the young Philippine-American tenor Arthur Espiritu is a singer who possesses an exceptionally beautiful lyric voice, is capable of conveying a broad range of characters, and performs with great ease. Described as singing "superbly" "with beautiful legato" "a regal tenor" his career to date has included important assignments in Europe, Asia and the United States. In Europe and Asia, he has performed with the Accademia of Teatro alla Scala as a guest artist, Piccolo Teatro di Milano, Opera Fuoco, Theatre St. Gallen in Switzerland, Théâtre Champs-Élisées in Paris, France. Israeli Opera in Tel Avia, Israeli Opera, the Learners Chorus in Hong Kong, the Oulu Sinfonia of Finland and opera performances in Linz with Maestro Martin Sieghart at the Brucknerhalle and Brucknerhaus. In the US, Mr. Espiritu has been seen on the mainstages of Pittsburgh Opera, Connecticut Opera, Opera Memphis, Opera North, and has sung in concert with Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Jefferson Performing Arts Society. In addition, he has participated in the distinguished summer series of the Marlboro Music Festival. Recent and upcoming projects in the 2010-2012 Seasons for Mr. Espiritu include a return to St. Gallen where he made role debuts in Sonnambula (Elvino) and Alcina (Oronte), a reprise of Tamino in a company debut with the Israeli Opera, Tel Aviv, and reprises of Count Almaviva for Ashlawn Opera, Don Ramiro in a return to Opera North (NH), reprises of Don Ottavio in Linz and Ried, Tamino in the US for Austin Lyric Opera and Foresto for Washington Concert Opera. Mr. Espiritu also looks forward to a company and role debut singing Publio in Mozart’s Il sogno di Scipione for Gotham Chamber Opera and a role debut singing the Duke (Rigoletto) in a return to St. Gallen as a guest performer. In concert Mr. Espiritu sings the tenor solos in Beethoven’s 9th Symphony with Learners Chorus, Hong Kong, China and Rossini’s Messa di Gloria in a debut with the Oulu Sinfonia, Oulu, Finland.
Mr. Espiritu has maintained a full performance schedule since having received an Artist Diploma from Oberlin College Conservatory of Music in 2004. In recent seasons, in addition to the title role of Ormindo in Cavalli's L'Ormindo, he performed Tybalt in Gounod's Roméo et Juliette, Beppe in Leoncavallo's I Pagliacci, and Maintop in Pittsburgh Opera's highly acclaimed presentation of Benjamin Britten's Billy Budd. Also in the season, Mr. Espiritu sang the tenor solo in the Mozart Coronation Mass with Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra and was tenor soloist in The Symphony on Ice, a concert presented on tour by the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra and he performed in the Belvedere Winners Concert in Vienna, Austria. Most recent and upcoming roles include Fernando in Mozart's Così fan tutte with the Accademia of Teatro alla Scala and Piccolo Teatro di Milano, the principal role of Don Ramiro in Rossini's La Cenerentola for Opera Memphis, and a return to Pittsburgh Opera's Benedum Center for his debut performance of Tebaldo in Bellini's I Capuleti ed I Montecchi with Laura Claycomb and Vivica Genaux. Mr. Espiritu reprised Don Ottavio in the season in his company debut with Opera Fuoco on tour to St. Quentin en Yvlines, La Rochelle, and Orleans, France. He debuted the role of opposite Pamela Armstrong for Connecticut Opera and performed Almaviva for Opera North. The 2009-2010 Season comprised a company debut with the Theatre St. Gallen, Switzerland where he reprised Ferrando in Mozart's Così fan tutte and debuted the roles of Egeo in Mayr's Medea in Corinto and Cadmo in Donizetti's Il diluvio universale. Additionally, Mr. Espiritu made his theater and role debuts singing the Sailor and the Spirit in a concert version of Purcell's Dido and Aeneas Théâtre Champs-Élisées.
Other roles for Arthur Espiritu in prior seasons include Ferrando in Mozart's Cosí fan tutte, Brighella in Strauss' Ariadne auf Naxos, and Borsain Rigoletto. During this period Mr. Espiritu added the role of the Duke to his growing repertoire as a cover to the much admired Frank Lopardo's Duke. Other additions to his repertoire included Count Almaviva which he covered as a young artist in his second season with Santa Fe Opera in 2005 and Mao tse tung in John Adams's Nixon in China which he covered in 2004 while in the young artist program at the Opera Theatre of St. Louis. Also in 2004 while in the Opera Theatre of St. Louis program, he played the role of Remendadoin Bizet's Carmen. Immediately following assignments in St. Louis, Mr. Espiritu joined Opera North and performed the roles of Francis Flute in Britten's A Midsummer Night's Dream and Tybalt in Roméo and Juliette.
In addition to the 2009 George London Award, Mr. Espiritu received the La Scala Award as part of the Belvedere Vocal Competition in Vienna, Austria, a 2nd Place in the Irene Dalis Vocal Competition, the Rose-Palmai Tenser Mobile Opera Guild Award, 2ndplace in the Opera Birmingham Voice Competition, 2nd place in the Regional Finals of the Metropolitan Opera National Council Audition, an encouragement award from the Gerda Lissner Foundation and The National Opera Association Voice Competition. Mr. Espiritu received an Artist Diploma from Oberlin College Conservatory of Music and earned both a Bachelor of Arts and a Master of Music from the University of New Orleans.
