Houston-born soprano Hanan Alattar is a beautiful and gifted artist who is in high demand on both the operatic and concert stages. Described as a “most stylish singer” with a “crystalline soprano” she has performed with distinguished opera companies and symphony orchestras in the United States and abroad. In opera, Ms. Alattar has sung with Los Angeles Opera, English National Opera, Seattle Opera, Arizona Opera, Opera Theatre of St. Louis, Aspen Music Festival, Staatsoper Unter Den Linden, Berlin Staatsoper, New York City Opera, Palm Beach Opera, Austin Lyric Opera, Bard Music Festival, and Gotham Chamber Opera. In concert she has been heard with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Seattle Symphony Orchestra, New World Symphony, Ft. Worth Symphony, Columbus Symphony, West East Divan Orchestra, American Symphony Orchestra in various venues including the Ravinia Festival, and the Lincoln Center Festival in the US,and the Saltzburg Festival and the Mozart Festival in Austria.

A dramatically expressive singer, Ms. Alattar has made important debuts in recent seasons to excellent acclaim. In 2011, she sang Pamina (Die Zauberflöte) in a Seattle Opera debut and again for Austin Lyric Opera a company debut. Additionally in 2011, she gave highly applauded performances of the Mozart Requiem with the Seattle Symphony Orchestra.

The 2009-2010 season saw Ms. Alattar in significant role and company debuts - in new productions and remounts both in the US and the UK. She began the season with Rosina in James Robinson’s celebrated production of The Ghosts of Versailles for Opera Theatre of St. Louis followed by a company and role debut singing Micaëla for Boston Lyric Opera. She next performed Clarice in Haydn’s Il Mondo della Luna at The Hayden Planetarium followed by Schumann’s Scenes from Goethe’s Faust for American Symphony Orchestra. Underscoring Ms. Alattar’s talents as a dramatic artist, The New York Post wrote of her portrayal of Clarice , “The gem of the score, the haunting aria “Quanta gente che sospira,” went to the most stylish singer, lyric soprano Hanan Alattar” ; for her very fine work with American Symphony Orchestra, Time Out NY wrote, ”…Alattar boasted a magnetic, feline personality onstage and a crystalline soprano to match.” Ms. Alattar completed the season giving exceptionally beautiful performances of Leila in a new production of The Pearl Fishers by film-maker and opera director Penny Woolcock for English National Opera about which The British Theater Guide wrote , “The role of Leila is superbly sung by the silken voiced American soprano Hannan Alattar whose duets with Boe are the great feature of this performance.”

2008-2009 brought additional important first appearances for Ms. Alattar. She sang Konstanze in Die Entführung aus dem Serail with James Conlon and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra at the Ravinia Festival and she sang Musetta in Jonathan Miller’s new production of La Bohème for the English National Opera - now on classicaltv.com . Other debuts in the season included performances of Bachianas Brasileiris with West-Eastern Divan Orchestra under the baton of Daniel Barenboim at the Salzburg Festival and Manon with the Berlin Staatsoper – also under the direction of Mo. Barenboim.

Since embarking on her career, Ms. Alattar has successfully presented key roles in both traditional and modern repertoire. Earlier seasons included Gilda (Rigoletto) for both Palm Beach Opera and Opera Santa Barbara, Pamina (Die Zauberflöte) for Arizona Opera, Dragonette in the world premiere of Elliot Goldenthal’s Grendel and directed by Julie Taymor, at both the Los Angeles Opera and the Lincoln Center Festival; productions of Don Carlos (Heavenly Voice), L’incoronazione di Poppea(Amore and Damigella) at the Los Angeles Opera, and Manon covering the title role and singing Pousette, now on DVD from Deutsche Grammophone conducted by Placido Domingo. She has also sung Water in The Little Prince, Zerlina in Don Giovanni, and First Maid in Daphne, Tatyana in Eugene Onegin, the title role in Stravinsky’s The Nightingale, Blanche in Dialogues des Carmélites, Giorgetta in Il Tabarro, the title role of Lucia in Lucia di Lammermoor, and a concert performance Stravinsky’s Les Noces, Ms. Alattar’s exceptional dramatic skills have been particularly evident in such portrayals as Alceste in Christopher Alden’s gender-bending production of Arianna in Creta; as Sacagawea, a role she created for Opera Theatre of St. Louis in Stephen Mager’s Dream of the Pacific; and as Ghita in the rarely performed work Der Zwerg with Olivier Tambosi.

Concert engagements for Ms. Alattar have included performances of Bubikoph (Der Kaiser von Atlantis) with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Los Angeles Philharmonic, the New World Symphony, Spoleto Festival in Italy and the Central Synagogue in New York City, all under the baton of James Conlon; Rossini’s Petite Messe Solennelle at Lincoln Center’s Alice Tully Hall; and the title role in Rusalka in fully staged concert performances with Miguel Harth Bodoya and the Forth Worth Symphony. She has performed Barber’s Prayers of Kierkegaard with University of Texas Symphony Orchestra, and she has been presented in recital in New York’s Weill Hall by the Marilyn Horne Foundation. Ms. Alattar was again presented in recital by the Marilyn Horne Foundation and returned to sing and record Behzad Ranjbaran’s Songs of Eternity with the Ft. Worth Symphony.

Ms Alattar is a graduate of the University of Texas and the Juilliard School, is a the recipient of a Sullivan Foundation Award, is a winner of the Aspen Concerto Competition, and was a finalist in the Eleanor McCollum Competition for Young Singers.
